The Chaos of Probability - Too Many Twos.

Updated: Jan 8

Hey Hey Everyone, why in the H E double hockey sticks is Melissa rolling a "2" on dice while playing in the Windstone Chronicles every night? Honestly probabilityit's took a vacation and now its only 2s. She has some extra ones if you need.

Of course we have all had bad rolling streaks from time to time. Its part of playing TTRPGs. However lately the 2s have been appearing like Copperbind bunnies in springtime, and probability seems to be telling us something?

In the Windstone Chronicles Vol 2 Adventure in the Secret Faerie Forest, where the fates are in chaos, the chances of rolling a two on a 20-sided die are not a mere 1 in 20, but rather nearly a sure bet every time. Why?

Numbers don't lie. Do they?

Now if we take this logically (and ignore the fact that magic and adventure seem to be popping up more in Melissa and my real life than ever before) we can look at the following "scientific" reasons:

  1. Chance: In a random sequence of rolls, it is entirely possible to have a streak of the same number occur multiple times in a row. While it might seem unlikely, probability allows for both common and rare outcomes.

  2. Statistical fluctuations: Randomness can exhibit streaks and clusters that may appear unusual but are within the realm of statistical expectations. Even with a 5% chance, it is possible to experience a streak of the same number in a series of rolls.

  3. Perception bias: Human perception can sometimes play tricks on us. We tend to notice patterns or anomalies more readily than we do random sequences. If you're specifically looking for the number "2" and paying close attention to its occurrence, it might create a biased perception of it happening more frequently than it actually is.

  4. Flawed dice: While rare, it's possible that all the dice Melissa and I own might have some inherent bias, manufacturing defect, or irregularity that causes them to favor a particular face. This could result in the repeated appearance of " 2."

There are no coincidences.

Now if we don't take this logically and look at the evidence, a lot of which you can find on the numerous YouTube shorts Melissa and I have posted where we constantly roll a "2". A different explanation emerges, there are no coincidences, in fact, there is something happening when we let adventure into our lives when we let our imagination loose. Signs appear that what we are doing is in fact magic, real magic. We may not be throwing fireball spells from our hands, but something small is happening and to quote one of the greatest movies of all time. "See? That was nothing. But that's how it always begins. Very small." - Egg Shen, Big Trouble in Little China.

What does it all mean?

Playing with your friends and your family, it's not the number on the dice that defines us—it's the tales we create along the way. Embrace the chaos, cherish the unexpected, and remember that when you play the Windstone Chronicles and let your imagination guide you, the coincidences you are seeing might just be trying to tell you something.

Remember our tale of the perpetual twos. Embrace the absurdity, revel in the unexpected, and let the laughter echo through the halls of your gaming table, for the Windstone Chronicles Vol 2 might just spark something.

Until we meet again, may the odds be ever in your favor—unless those odds happen to be two.
